Born on June 27, 1910, into the eminent Deshprabhu family of Pernem, Shriram Balkrishna Deshprabhu was perhaps among the first few students who went to the US during the earlier years of the last century. He was sent by the Tatas for higher education in the discipline of anatomical drawing. The Tatas were planning to raise a cancer hospital in Bombay (The first in Asia).
i am his daughter in law and probably the most fortunate of all his relations to have got the opportunity to look after him in his old age. my dear father -in -law was a great man , you don’t easily come across people like him.All i can say is that i was lucky to have been by his side when he breathed his last.

do you know that my dear pitaji had made a tie and dye of a huge smiling face on a silk cloth and had written tie and die under it ….. you know why ? … when he was fit and fine one day he called me and told me that i should cover him when he passed away with a tie and dye that he has made and that it was in his cupboard .. he asked me to see it only after he passed away … so when the day came and my dear pitaji was no more i went to fetch the said tie and dye to cover him …. when i finally opened it i could not believe my eyes .. it was such a beautiful tie and die … but alas i had to cover him with it … after that i lost him for ever …. he was truly a unsung great man .. i know no other .

Integrity hard work and social commitment, were Mr. Deshprabhu’s transferent virtues. He was admirer of Albert Einsten, when in America he had made it a point to see the great philosopher scientist and he did succeed in meeting him personaly. He found Einsten a very lovable kind and simple preson. Einsten showed great admiration for India and Mahatma Gandhi.Deshprabhu left America after seeing Einsten; as the final reward for his American tryst. He retired as the director of Council of Scientific Industrial Research Centre.
