Further information indicates that the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) is considering coming to Uganda with an initial investment of US$20m (about Ush36.2 billion).

AKFED has reportedly applied for a licence under the name of Meridiana Africa Airlines Uganda Limited. If all goes according to plan, Meridiana should start operations in the second quarter of the year.

The airline is expected to initially serve major regional routes like Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Kigali and Dar-es-Salaam.

It will initially start with two aircrafts (both cargo and passenger). Meridiana Africa Airlines Uganda Limited intends to consolidate its position in the region before it considers long haul routes.

AKFED has controlling stakes in the national carriers of Mali and Burkina Faso.

Meridiana is a major carrier in Italy, behind ailing flag carrier Alitalia.
