Aga Khan Academy students visit centre for street kids

All part of a balanced education …

What makes a child truly happy ?

Coastweek – -What makes a child truly happy ? When asked this
question, children think of playstations, bikes and computers among
other yearning wants.

It is only when one gets a chance to see children who do not receive
basic needs that one then appreciates what one has.

The Year Six students of The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa visited Wema
Centre in Kizingo – a centre for street boys.

It was here that they realized -through listening to the stories of
the street boys-how these young members of society have had to
struggle to exist.

The centre gives them meals, offers counselling and taps their talents.

The Year Six students wanted to make these young boys feel cared for
by them.

They invited the boys to their school for a friendly football match
and treated them to lunch.

Each street boy received a new T-shirt too.  In this way, friends have
been established between Wema and Aga Khan Academy.

Future football matches are in the pipeline as well as the Wema boys
teaching the Year Sixes a skill.

Through this interaction, the students of The Aga Khan Academy and
their teachers, Mrs. Brenda Menezes and Ms. Judith Misigo witnessed
what makes a child truly happy.

The handshakes after the football match, the beaming smiles when lunch
was served, the gratitude in the eyes when receiving the T-shirts.

The Wema Boys felt loved and treated as fellow companions.

If only the government or some other generouslocal donors could
provide these young boys with a place to stay – they would not have to
sleep in the streets.
