Ismailis to open new center
The Aga Khan, hereditary leader of Ismaili Muslims, met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on October 25 to announce the forthcoming opening of a Global Center for Pluralism. It is to be a think-tank to promote pluralism across the globe.
Canada has recently opened a new war museum, and the Ismailis will house their center in the now-empty old war museum building. Canada has pledged $30 million (Canadian) toward the new center, with the Aga Khan planning to spend an additional $40 million. He is impressed by the leadership Canada has shown in the area of diversity, citing as an example the welcome Canada gave to Ismailis driven out of Uganda by Idi Amin. He sees Canada’s actions as a model for other countries.
The Aga Khan is building another facility nearby, as headquarters for the Aga Khan Development Network, a heavyweight in the field of international development, and he is also planning a museum of Islamic art to be built in Toronto.
