Dallas shows global credentials – AKF Partnership Walk
Excerpt:
The annual Partnership Walk, sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation USA, takes place Oct. 29. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at Dallas City Hall Plaza, with opening ceremonies at 11. Volunteer walkers raise funds, as well as awareness, to combat global poverty. A Village in Action and interactive exhibits on the plaza will show visitors what village life is like in many Third World countries. According to spokesman Rafiq Lakhani, the funds raised in Dallas will help fund health care projects overseas.
“These projects help save lives – especially those of children and mothers,” said Mr. Lakhani. “The foundation also promotes girls’ education in places like Pakistan, Kenya and Afghanistan and helps farmers in Tajikistan and India.”
The Partnership Walk allows local residents to be part of the solution to world poverty. “We must tackle poverty because poverty is one of the biggest sources of instability and conflict in the world today,” said Mr. Lakhani. “Lack of economic opportunities lies at the root of most conflicts over the last 30 years, ahead of ethnic, political or ideological issues. By fighting poverty and despair, we can build a better and safer world for everyone.”
