Madrasa Resource Centre, Kenya – funded and supported by the Aga Khan Foundation…

AMBASSADOR MICHEAL E. RANNEBERER
AT KHAIRAT CENTRE IN MWEMBE KUKU

Coastweek – – The United States Ambassador to Kenya, His Excellency Mr. Micheal E. Ranneberer visited Khairat Muslim Nursery School in Mwembe Kuku on September 26, 2006.

Khairat Nursery School was mobilized in early 1987 and the school opened its doors on May 04, 1987 with the assistance of Madrasa Resource Centre, Kenya (MRCK ).

It is one of the first schools to be established by the MRC.

The MRC is funded and supported by the Aga Khan Foundation.

The MRC works in the three districts in the Coast province, namely Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa to assist marginalised communities to set up Earlychhilhood centres which caters for children between the ages of 3-6years old.

The MRC mandate includes empowering and supporting communities to initiate and own community based ECD centres, develop training methodologies, teaching programs and manuals.

USAID support to this school began in July 2004 to the tune of USD $ 1000, which has gone towards provision of learning materials, renovation of the toilet, play ground equipment, capacity building for teachers and school management commitees.

Khairat has a total enrolment of 65 children and three teachers.

The most encouraging thing is that the school is owned by the community and the community takes pride in ensuring that standards are maintained.

  1. My name is Erin McDougall, I am an Early Childhood Educator in the province of British Columbia in Canada. I saw a program about the Madrasa schools on Television, I think the program was called “Frist Steps” and I was so excited to see the progress that the Madrasa schools are offering. We practice free play and active learning on a daily basis in the daycare centers here in Canada, and it is so amazing to see this being offered cross-culturally. I had no idea this schooling was being offered in Africa and I hope one day to visit and share and colloaborate on ideas with other Madrasa Educators concerning the care and education of young children.
