The city of Houston mourns the loss of a remarkable leader, Sylvester Turner, who passed away on March 5 at the age of 70. As mayor, Turner was not only a visionary leader but also a steadfast friend to the Ismaili community of Houston. His engagement with the Ismaili community was more than ceremonial; it was a testament to his belief in the power of unity and collaboration. Whether attending cultural events, supporting community initiatives, or fostering interfaith dialogue, Turner consistently demonstrated his respect and admiration for the Ismaili values of service, education, and pluralism.

One of the most memorable moments of his tenure was his participation in the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan IV. Turner’s heartfelt words during the event highlighted his deep appreciation for the Ismaili community’s contributions to Houston’s social fabric. He often spoke of the community as a model of harmony and civic engagement, inspiring others to build bridges across differences.

Turner’s legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and inclusivity. As we reflect on his life, let us honor his memory by continuing to uphold the values he cherished—values that resonate deeply with the Ismaili ethos. The Ismaili community, along with all of Houston, has lost a true ally and friend. Yet, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the city he helped shape.

Rest in peace, Sylvester Turner. Your light will continue to guide us.
