The three-day international colloquium, “Word of God, Art of Man: The Qur’an and its Creative Expressions”, commenced on October 18, 2003, featuring an evening reception and a plenary lecture by Gulru Necipoglu, Aga Khan Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at MIT. The official proceedings started on October 19 with an address by His Highness the Aga Khan, followed by an Opening Lecture by the esteemed Art Historian, Oleg Grabar.
Over 250 scholars, students, and artists attended this inaugural conference of the Qur’anic Studies Unit at The Institute of Ismaili Studies. The event was the second in a series celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Institute’s founding, following the Nasir Khusraw Millennium Conference held earlier in Tajikistan.
