International Pharmaceutical Federation Calls For Action on Climate Change

The world’s first policy on pharmacy and climate change was just passed unanimously by all of the countries present at the executive meeting in [Brisbane] Australia as part of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) world congress. [The conference was held from September 24-28].

The co-chairman of the volunteer-based organization,, the Canadian Association of Pharmacy for the Environment (CAPhE), Shellyza Moledina Sajwani, had the opportunity to present the draft as the policy committee co-chair and representative for Canada along with her co-chair from Nigeria.

This confirmed policy will now go out to influence more than 150 countries in every area of pharmacy practice , including academia , hospital and community pharmacy, pharmaceutical industry , public health etc

Shellyza also won an international award for contribution to pharmacy practice given to one mid-career pharmacist in the world every 3 years.

In her acceptance remarks, Shellyza thanked her family, friends and mentors, the work of all staff and volunteer teams as well as His Highness the Aga Khan.

Shellyza expressed that witnessing the work of so many individuals from diverse ages and backgrounds working away from the spotlight through often voluntary structures , gives her hope in a rapidly changing world.

She concluded that humanity – with all its complexities and flaws – has an inherent beauty which is worth protecting for the generations of tomorrow and the generations of today.
