Zabeen Hirji delivered the Commencement Address at the University of Toronto Scarborough convocation on June 5.
“What a privilege to make the convocation address to the University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus Class of 2023. Without question, this was a highlight of my #PurposefulThirdAct.
The excitement and pride of the graduates, their families, and friends was palpable especially as the graduates walked across the stage.

Some points I shared:
“This is an exciting day for you and for our country. The future of Canada and our world will be shaped by your choices and actions.
Each of you brings a unique story, shaped by your education, talent, ideas, and lived experiences. You are capable of reimagining what could be, without the constraints of what has been. You have opportunities to collaborate and co-create solutions that earlier generations could never have considered!
Leadership is not a title – it is mindsets, it is everyday behaviour, it is courage.
So graduates: Dream big, then take action to get there.
If not you, then who? If not now, then when?”
I’ve learnt from my successes and mistakes, and shared three guiding principles that have helped me.
Lead with your #values
🔹The important questions to answer are “Who do I want to be?” and “What does it take to build a life of purpose and meaning?” Only you can answer these for yourself – this requires reflection, humility and courage.
🔹Clearly articulate your values and use them to guide your decisions and behaviours, big and small – this will help you find deep fulfillment, develop meaningful relationships, and to build stronger communities.
🔹Staying true to who you are and what you believe is vitally important – it’s about doing what’s right, not what’s easy.
Be a #diversity, equity and #inclusion advocate. We simply won’t reach our potential as individuals, or a country, without equity and full inclusion.
🔹Start early – I didn’t become a diversity champion until my mid-30’s. I should have started earlier. Use your voice, your privilege, your influence.
🔹Be inclusive – Be deliberate about inviting diverse voices into conversations and ensuring they’re heard.
🔹There is no such thing as an innocent bystander – if you see something, say something.
Your career is a long game – consider long term impacts when making decisions.
🔹When assessing career opportunities, ask:
▶ What skills will I add to my portfolio?
▶ Which leaders will I learn from?
▶ Will this create more options for the future?
🔹As a result, I took two jobs at the same level and even accepted a job at a lower level – a “demotion” – which turned out to be a pivotal career move.
🔹I also declined my first executive position offer shortly after my second maternity leave to focus on being a new mom. The next executive role offered to me was in HR – that worked out quite well.
Congratulations Class of 2023! I wish you much success and joy in your next chapter.
