Dr. Karim Damji receives UBC’s 2017 Global Citizenship Award

For the past 100 years, UBC alumni have proven they are capable of amazing things. On November 30, 2017, at the alumni UBC Achievement Awards Gala Dinner and Auction, they honoured eight inspiring members of the UBC community who, through their extraordinary endeavours, have taken the lead on important issues to create positive social change.

Karim Damji, MD’87 – Global Citizenship Award

Dr. Karim Damji heads the University of Alberta’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the Eye Institute of Alberta. Dedicated to global health — with strong links to East Africa, where glaucoma is a common blinding disease — he shares knowledge and skills with ophthalmologists, so they are empowered to find sustainable solutions and offer quality eye care in their own countries. His approach has enabled thousands of people to benefit from innovative training, detection, and treatment models.

  1. Dear Dr. Damji – this is Kamrudin Rashid from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who has been your long standing acquaintance since your appointment as the President of the Ismaili Council for Ottawa for two terms when I had the opportunity and honor to travel to Ottawa to support the newly established Council for Ottawa. Since then we were also in touch with each other in Edmonton and now at the AKU in Karachi, Pakistan. Your service to the Jamat and the Imam has been exemplary and we pray for your good health to continue for many years to come. Ameen.

My comments today includes our heartfelt condolences to you and indeed to your entire family for the demise of your beloved father Al-Waez Rai Fatehali Gulamhusein Damji in Vancouver, B.C. I had the opportunity to meet and spend good time with him at the Aga Khan Museum when he came to Toronto with your brother Farid for our meetings in 2015 for the renewal of museum membership. I must admit I was struck with his knowledge about our faith. He will be dearly missed by family members and the Jamat. We pray that may his soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen. We also pray for courage and fortitude to the entire family. Ameen.

INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAYHI RAJIOON.

Kamrudin A. Rashid – Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

    March 26 2024.
