Today (December 13, 2017), the worldwide Ismaili Muslims celebrate Mawlana Hazar Imam – Founder and Chairman of the AKDN, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan’s 81st birthday (Salgirah).
Born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1936, he succeeded his grandfather to become the 49th Imam at the age of 20. During six decades of his Imamat, His Highness has devoted himself to the spiritual and worldly progress. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) brings together a number of development agencies, institutions, and programmes that work primarily in the poorest parts of Asia and Africa. AKDN is a contemporary endeavour of the Ismaili Imamat to realise the social conscience of Islam through institutional action.
