The new programmatic formula of “Musical Thursdays” was honored on 24 November 2016 at the National Museum of Bamako.

Present at the launch of the new concept, the director of the National Museum, Samuel Sidibé, stressed his desire to make a difference. “The Musical Thursdays existed for almost 12 years. We made an assessment of what we have done so far. We thought every Thursday was difficult to hold, first economically, and if we are to do correct programming. That’s why we decided to change frequency. One Thursday a month, gives us time to prepare. ”

With the help of the Aga Khan, the music flourishes in the National Museum of Bamako. The representative shared, “Musical Thursdays while celebrating their 12th year of existence, the Aga Khan Music Initiative pursues and develops its partnership with the National Museum.”

“The new draft Bassékou Kouyaté, commissioned by the Aga Khan Music Initiative, shows a shift in programming Musical Thursdays: develop training inspired by traditional music, but not limited by them,” he said.

The musical player N’goni, Bassékou Kouyaté, descendant of a family of Garana, Garana Roots and overall, gave the kickoff of the programmatic formula. In addition to being a virtuoso of an old instrument of generations, Bassékou Kouyaté also has the merit of controlling the international scene and an educational meaning that earned him the opening of a school.

Original concept of the management of the National Museum, the artistic entertainment program, musical and cultural aims to open the doors of the Museum, promote and establish a real museum culture by the music channel to have a public various and multicolored.

Among the new “Musical Thursdays” will be dedicated to four children (Denmessew Foli), an educational program led by the balafon player Lassana Diabaté and his association of Foli Lakana who work throughout the year in identifying and framing talented young musicians and singers rooted in heritage.

The collaboration between the National Museum and the Aga Khan Music Initiative, begun in 2014, helped make the activity of “Musical Thursdays” sustainable.

The initiative of the Aga Khan for music’s mission is to ensure the transmission of musical traditions. It is part of the ambition of cultural revival and educational support of the Aga Khan Trust For Culture.
