It’s almost always bad news these days when Syria makes the headlines, but a new exhibit at The Aga Khan Museum seeks to change the conversation. Syria: A Living History is the latest from the Aga Khan Museum, exploring 5000 years of Syrian heritage and culture.
The museum celebrates Muslim civilizations as its MO, and this particular temporary exhibit may be its most ambitious yet. It boasts over 50 pieces that have arrived from collections in Toronto, Dubai, The Moma and the Louvre.
At the heart of this exhibit is evidence of how ancient multiculturalism shaped the region’s history and influenced the items on display. With all eyes on Syria’s bloody civil war, and a refugee crisis spiraling out of control, Mark Wigmore spoke to Aga Khan Museum Director and CEO Henry Kim about this historical cultural reaction to a modern tragedy.
