Sisters Nabeela and Safia Nathoo start new graduate scholarship

Sisters Nabeela and Safia Nathoo start new graduate scholarshipIf “scholarship donor” conjures up images of affluent older folks who want to share some of their wealth with their alma mater, you haven’t met the Nathoo sisters.

Safia Nathoo and Nabeela Nathoo are young — one is fresh out of university, the other is still a student — but they’ve already launched a new scholarship as a way of giving back to their beloved University of Calgary.

“We feel very lucky to have attended UCalgary”

The Nathoo Family Graduate Scholarship, worth $2,000, is open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based graduate program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. And in keeping with the sisters’ own dedication to community work, the scholarship seeks to reward grad students also involved in leadership and volunteer activities.

“This [scholarship] is a way to pay it forward,” says Safia, BSc’07, MSc’09, MBA’14, who quips that she and her sister are “three-time alumni.”

Indeed, once Nabeela graduates from medical school next year, between them they’ll have earned six degrees from UCalgary.

“We feel very lucky to have attended UCalgary,” says Safia. “We received scholarships that allowed us to have wonderful, amazing experiences here. UCalgary has had an enormous impact on our lives, personally and professionally.”
