Zain Velji: Our Many Hats

Our Many Hats — Zain VeljiAs Canadians, we love wearing hats.

Take me for example: I’m a male (hat), an Ismaili Muslim (hat), a son (hat), a Canadian (hat). You get the point.

I also wear another hat: I work as a campaign strategist.

My work in politics has led to me to occupy senior positions on political campaigns, attempting (sometimes with success) to get elected candidates who I feel will help to add texture to our country’s fabric.

Politics is my sport (insert athlete joke here), and when I’m not on the field, I sit on the sidelines — appreciating the art, the agility, the execution of political campaigns. And more importantly, giving respect to the brilliance displayed by the many crafty and skilled strategists, regardless of political party or partisan stripe.

The simple equation is this: I’m not more male than I am Canadian. I’m not more Canadian than I am Muslim.

I’m the equal aggregation of all of my identities. We all are.
