Maki’s stark, angular building, located in Don Mills, is the perfect backdrop to show off the intricate mashrabiya patterns carved, etched or painted on the glass, wood and metal objects on display. The family holdings of the Aga Khan, the hereditary leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, include rare illustrations from the Persian epic Shah-Nameh, Asian robes and Persian ceramics dating back to the 10th century, along with scientific manuscripts, copies of the Qur’an and musical instruments. All of this is artfully arranged in the light-filled space, where the architect has added his own pattern of shadows dancing across some of the walls and floor.
Parks and Meditation
More than 10 years went into the planning and design of the Aga Khan Park. Landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic toured famous Islamic gardens and brought the traditional elements of water and shade into this oasis, placing granite benches beneath serviceberry trees that overlook five reflecting pools for a calming distraction.
