“I realized as a junior in high school that I wanted to work around the NBA, whether as a writer, agent or front office exec…Something about writing always captured me”
via Clevis Murray blog: Michael Wilbon (ESPN), Stephen A. Smith (ESPN), Marc Stein (ESPN), Ken Berger (CBS Sports), Adrian Wojnawoski (Yahoo! Sports), David Aldridge (NBA.com and TNT), Brian Windhorst (ESPN), etc., are some of the most recognizable NBA reporters in the profession as of right now. Being a fan and aspiring journalist, I can only dream of being in their position when I’m older. Everyone I mentioned is an established veteran in the field, but a young up-and-comer who is making a name for himself and will soon become a go-to reporter is Shams Charania of RealGM.com.
Charania is making a name for himself early in an industry that is is very time consuming. Which means in his 20s, Charania, could be sacrificing things that others in his age group couldn’t or just chiefly wouldn’t. It’s hard to name more sports journalists in their 20s that are on the rise like the one Charania is on. He’s become a true insider “by developing sources and my writing.”
Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Charania grew up to become an avid Chicago Bulls fan. With his passion for the Bulls mixed in with the general NBA and sprinkled with writing, his profession seemed easy to select while he was in high school. While in high school, Charania wrote for his hometown website chicagonow.com as a Chicago Bulls blogger. Charania wrote primarily and extensively about the Bulls for that site from 2010-2012. Writing about his hometown Bulls, Charania would have daily posts on the site ranging from game recaps to opinion pieces. The combination of Charania’s passion for writing and the NBA, had easily put him on cloud nine.
In the spring of March 2012, Charania joined RealGM.com, and has evolved from volunteer to senior reporter. In three short years, Charania has jet rocketed through the ranks, and can easily been seen as the most valuable asset as of now to RealGM.
