Toronto walk expected to attract thousands, raised $7-million in Canada last year
Thousands of Toronto residents are expected to converge at David Pecaut Square at Metro Hall this Sunday, May 24 to participate in the 31st World Partnership Walk which aims to increase awareness and raise funds to help fight global poverty.
Last year’s 5K walk attracted about 10,000 supporters in Toronto and another 30,000 across the country, raising more than $7 million.
An initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, the World Partnership Walk provides an experience that is both meaningful and fun for the whole family through activities that inform, educate, celebrate and entertain.
Activities include team games, a kids’ zone, on-stage entertainment and delicious food. Participants can also learn about their ‘dollars at work’ at the Change is Possible tent.
The actual walk is slated to kick off at 11:15 a.m. It involves the streets immediately surrounding Metro Hall (King, Wellington and Simcoe streets) as well as a portion of University Avenue between Wellington and College streets.
The walk site opens at 8 a.m. with closing remarks scheduled for 2:35 p.m. Family activities kick off at 8:30 a.m.
New this year, the Canadian Aga Khan Foundation will have a new mobile exhibition on site designed to spark conversations about the role Canadians can play in reducing global poverty.
Metroland Media Toronto is an official media sponsor.

The first Walk on June 23rd 1985 was actually organised by the Women’s Portfolio of the Ismaili Council for BC , Ismaili Women ‘s Organisation (IWO) in collaboration with AKFC as the legal entity for the fund collections. The first Walk was called “WALK FOR THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES”. And was followed by the second WALK in 1986. AKFC with the foresighted CEO and Board took over this initiative from 1987 onwards and deserve all the accolades for sustaining it and taking it to the outstanding levels in the last 31 years . KUDOS ! KUDOS KUDOS to AKFC.!
How heartening that Hon Kathleen Wynn, Premier of Ontario even mentioned yesterday’s WALK in Toronto in her speech at the Inauguration of the Park today. Clearly WPW has enhanced our profile in Canada.
I was Member for Women on the Ismaili Council for BC and with the 15 member committee led by 5 core Women, responsible for this first Walk and thus want to set the record straight for the origins of the WALK even after so long …
