Shiraz Nazerali receives Fellows of the Chartered Accountants Award

The ICAA Merit Awards honour those Chartered Accountants who epitomize the best of the profession—those professionals who have given extensively and selflessly their time, talent and expertise in service of a wide variety of communities, organizations, and causes. This year, Merit Awards were granted in three categories: Fellows of the Chartered Accountants, Distinguished Service, and Early Achievement.

Shiraz first became a CA in 1975 in England and has been honoured with the FCA designation there. He obtained the Alberta CA designation in 1977. He presently is director of tax at Devon Canada Corporation, building a strong tax group over 15 years with his leadership and technical skills.

Shiraz believes that, being an Ismaili Muslim, volunteering was ingrained in him since a very young age; as such, he has served in various capacities for the last four decades in professional as well as community organizations. He has held positions in various tax organizations and eventually senior leadership positions within these organizations including the Tax Executives Institute (TEI), where Shiraz is currently vice president for Canadian affairs at the international level. Past roles with the organization include director and president. He has also been heavily involved with the Tax Committee of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and with the
Canadian Petroleum Tax Society.

He has served in many diversified voluntary organizations including senior leadership positions within the Ismaili Community as part of its Volunteer Corps, Economic Planning Board, Settlement Committee, Cultural committee, Services Fund raising group, Aga Khan Foundation and FOCUS Canada and other committees. Shiraz and his family were privileged to host an Afghan refugee family in their home for several months. For over a decade, he has served regularly at the Calgary Drop-in Centre. Shiraz has served on the Woodcreek Community Association Board of Directors and the Parent-Teachers School Council at E.P. Scarlett High School, contributing in a very meaningful and significant way. For several years, he contributed and continues to contribute at events like the Ismaili Annual Stampede Breakfast, World Partnership Walk, Forzani’s Mothers’ Day Run, the Canadian Citizen Court and other events. His achievements led him to receive a Distinguished Service Award from the ICAA in 2010. CAPP also has recognized him for his work with Special Recognition Awards in 2004, 2013 and 2014, and TEI recognized him with a Distinguished Service Award in 2013.
