Mr. Al-Karim Haji is the Director General and Chief Financial Officer of the Aga Khan University (AKU) that operates in Afghanistan, Egypt, Kenya, Pakistan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and the United Kingdom.

AKU is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of development agencies with mandates that include the environment, health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalisation of historic cities. AKDN agencies conduct their programmes without regard to faith, origin or gender.

AKU is a private, autonomous, not-for profit, needs blind university that admits students purely on merit. The University has 2,800 students and over 11,500 employees. AKU’s health services enterprise consists of seven hospitals and 253 medical centres with over 1.6 million patients treated annually. AKU’s hospitals in Karachi and Nairobi are Joint Commission International Accredited, making it the only academic medical centre that has obtained such accreditation on two continents.

During his eleven-year tenure at AKU, US $500 million in funding has been raised. Mr Haji is a member of the AKDN Endowment Investment Committee, a Charter Member of The Indus Entrepreneurs and formerly sat on the Board of the First Microfinance Agency Pakistan (Private) Limited. He is an alumnus of the University of British Columbia and a Canadian Chartered Accountant. Mr Haji has been actively involved in community service including serving two terms on the Senate of the University of British Columbia, a Board member of what is now FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance Canada and other voluntary positions with the United Way.
