After her retirement she briefly taught at Memon Primary School before joining the Aga Khan Foundation 1986-2006…she was famously referred to as “Nyanya” (Grandmother) by all children who she taught in the Madrasa Resource Centre.
Swafiya Salim Said Was Teacher And Mentor
Coastweek — Swafiya Salim Mohamed Muhashamy was born on 13th September, 1934 she was the second daughter of the late Sheikh Salim Mohamed Muhashamy M.B.E. (The Last Liwali of the Coast).
Her father took her to school at a time when Muslim community was against sending girls to school for fear of been converted to Christianity.She was enrolled at the Goan School (now Sacred Heart) both primary and secondary education. After her secondary school she joined the Government Teachers Training Institute (Now Shanzu Teachers Training College) – 1957-1958 (2 years).
She got married in May, 1956 to Mohamed Salim Said.
After her training she briefly taught at Burhani Primary School in Mombasa before joining her husband to go to U.K. where he was sent for course at BBC. They came back together before independence where her husband was appointed the Head of Broadcasting General Service Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.
