The Silk Road Project explores the exchange of ideas, cultures, music, and art that occurred along the ancient Silk Road from the first millennium B.C. to the middle of the second millennium A.D. Led by renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, in coordination with a distinguished team of scholars and musicians from around the world, the Project supports collaborations among artists from around the world. The Silk Road Ensemble, comprising musicians from the fields of folk and pop music, perform musical pieces composed by artists from the Silk Road countries.
In 2001, the Silk Road Project began its collaboration with the Aga Khan Music Initiative of Central Asia (AKMICA) to promote and preserve the music of countries along the Silk Road, where music is still passed down orally, but that tradition has become increasingly vulnerable.
The Aga Khan Music Initiative, established in 2000 by Mawlana Hazar Imam, provides financial resources and technical assistance for the restoration and performance of classical masterpieces. The aim of the Music Initiative is that resources from concerts and performances directly serve the communities in the Silk Road countries.
