TORONTO — Prime Minister Stephen Harper was a special guest at the inauguration of Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre, where he spoke of the shared values between Canadians and the Ismaili community.
Canada is home to a sizable community of the world’s 15 million Ismailis, who follow a moderate form of the religion. The Aga Khan heads the sect; the position is currently filled by Prince Shah Karim Al Husseini, a businessman of Swiss heritage.
Speaking to a full room, Harper praised the Ismaili community for its role in “demystifying Islam,” which he said was often “violently distorted” in the news.
