Ismailimail is sharing two stories from Indian media on the death of actor Richard Attenborough, along with related links on Aga Khan Palace, Pune and the family history of Krishna Bhanji aka British actor Ben Kingsley.
At Aga Khan palace, Attenborough stuck to rules as he filmed Gandhi – Ranade recalls how the director was interested in a project aimed at training Gandhian social workers in rural areas.
Aga Khan Palace in Pune has a link to Oscar-winning film Gandhi and its director Sir Richard Attenborough. It was shot for 10 days at the palace, during which, a lasting bond was created between the then secretary of the Gandhi National Memorial Society’s Shobhana Ranade and Attenborough, who breathed his last on Sunday.[1]

When Gandhian Morarji Desai objected to the ‘fake’ Gandhi
PUNE: It was not smooth sailing for legendary British filmmaker Richard Attenborough, who made the epic movie ‘Gandhi’, when he sought permission to shoot scenes relating to the last days of Kasturba Gandhi spent at the famous Aga Khan palace here, as he had to overcome an objection raised by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
Recalling this, Shobhana Ranade, the then secretary of Gandhi National Memorial Society (GNMS) trust, caretaker of the Aga Khan palace premises, said, “Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, a known Gandhian, was chairman of GNMS when Attenborough’s unit sought permission to shoot in the precincts of the palace which also has a ‘samadhi’ of Kasturba (wife of Mahatma Gandhi) who spent her last days there.”[2]
