Project: Canadian Student Microfinance Alliance

It all started for Alnur during an internship at Micro Africa, a microfinance agency in Nairobi, Kenya. While working at Micro Africa, Alnur helped to lead the implementation of mCollector, the anti-corruption software for Androids that enabled loan officers to manage their accounts online and increased accountability in the workplace. During his time in Nairobi, Alnur was shocked by the funding gap that existed due to the high demand for loans and the limited capital available. When he returned to Toronto, he founded The Canadian Student Microfinance Alliance. He was determined to “Bridge the Gap,” which became the name of their first initiative. He motivated youth across Canada to unite and raise funds to loan to micro-enterprises in the developing world. The CSMA has now spread to 20 schools across Canada. He has made microfinance relevant to Canadians and has played a key role in increasing awareness about its potential global impact. Alnur has also started a youth financial literacy mentorship program, which develops the financial literacy skills of inner-city youth. The program has made it possible for these young people to establish their own microfinance branches and contribute to the fight against global poverty.
