Natasha Heavens: The difference one school makes‘Year of Education’ empowers youth to build 200 new schools

Excerpt: “We don’t always realize how lucky we are to go to such a great school with everything at our fingertips,” says Natasha Heavens, a Grade 12 student and We Act group member at Ottawa’s Cairine Wilson Secondary School. “I think it’s important that everyone gets the opportunity for education, no matter their age.”

Cairine Wilson’s club started their We Create Change campaign in September, and plan to continue until June. From a holiday craft fair to a multicultural performance night, students are collecting coins wherever they can. So far, they’ve raised nearly $1,000 toward building a school in a Free The Children community.

“We’re a pretty small group, but we always pull it off no matter what’s thrown at us!” says Natasha.
This summer, Natasha is travelling overseas on a Me to We Trip to Kenya. Although she lives almost 12,000 kilometres away from Elizabeth’s remote Kenyan village, the two girls share a belief in the power of education. When they meet, they should have lots to talk about.
