Many people associate the Pamirs with the mountaineers that conquered all 7,000 meters of its expanse. The Great Silk Road formerly ran through the Pamirs. The mountain range is known as the “Roof of the World,” or “Bomi Dunyo.” Until now, there has been no unified interpretation of the word “Pamir.”
But the name is mostly thought to come from a combination of the words “poi mehr,” which means the “base of the sun.” People say “the air here is so clean you can drink it”. This is thanks to the fact that no plants or factories have been located here ever since the Soviet era. It was always believed the Pamirs had a strategic importance. But one way or another, they managed stay ecologically clean.
The Pamirs are in Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous province. The area has an ancient history and neighbors China and Afghanistan. The capital of the region is Khorog. Once, it was the crossroads of caravan routes leading from China and India to Central Asia and on to the shores of the Khazar (Caspian) Sea.
