The Book of Secrets — set in the racial melting pot of East Africa, where African, Arab, Indian, English and German cultures interlock — is my all-time favourite when it comes to MG Vassanji’s writing.
The Kenyan-born writer grew up in Tanzania and then won a scholarship in 1970 to study physics abroad.
“It was not part of my plan to settle abroad. I always thought I would return,” said the soft-spoken author, now resident in Canada.
“I am Asian, African and Canadian – all three,” he added, asserting his triple identity.
Vassanji was in Nairobi recently, hosted by the Storymoja publishers and Awaaz (Voice) magazine, to launch his latest novel, The Magic of Saida.
