Distinguished Scholars 2013: Sara Surani, General Academics

Distinguished Scholars 2013: Sara Surani, General AcademicsCORPUS CHRISTI — A holy grail in research for advanced scholars is to author a paper published in a scholarly journal. At age 17, as co-author of four published medical journal articles and a book chapter, Sara Surani has a bit of a jump on the process.

Glance at her resume, however, and published papers and international presentations do not show up until pages four and five. They come listed after the performance at Carnegie Hall that netted her second place in the Sonata and Sonatina International Piano Competition, after the $23,000 in grant funding from three foundations in support of her community projects to improve young people’s health, and after a list of more than a dozen national and state level academic awards.

Even this list does not fully capture Sara’s achievements.

“She’s extremely talented, a great researcher, and a quick thinker,” said English teacher Sydna Arnold. “She seems to make connections that other people at the same grade level have no clue about. She’s wise beyond her years.”
