Dar es Salaam Historic Centre, including Darkhana Jamatkhana, placed on 2014 World Monuments Watch

Dar es Salam JamatkhanaA Beacon for Heritage

Every two years since 1996, the World Monuments Watch is a call to action for cultural heritage around the globe that is at risk from the forces of nature and the impact of social, political, and economic change.

The 2014 World Monuments Watch

From modern marvels (Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, USA) to ancient civilizations (Cerro Sechin, Peru), to urban icons (Venice, Italy) and remote settlements (Ngada Villages, Indonesia), the 2014 Watch highlights 67 sites from 41 countries, each an irreplaceable testament to human aspiration and the diversity of cultures around the world.

DAR ES SALAAM HISTORIC CENTER – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

The older city center is still characterized by a thriving street life and attracts artists from all over Africa for its art and music events. Increasingly rapid urban development since the 1990s has hastened the demolition of many of Dar’s most significant monuments and historic structures. Through inclusion on the Watch, WMF hopes to raise awareness and facilitate capacity-building for the decision-makers and residents of the city to steward Dar’s future. In order to maintain the integrity of the city’s central historic area, it will be necessary to create an integrated master plan that focuses on conserving landmark buildings and traditional community spaces. With its rich architectural heritage, the city also has the potential to create a robust tourist industry that could sustain and improve the economic livelihoods of many in the local community.

  1. A big thank you to the World Monuments Fund for raising awareness of the importance of protecting the cultural heritage of Dar es Salaam Historic Centre! An integrated master plan will hopefully go a long way in preserving its rich architectural heritage.

  2. I am seeking permission to use the photo of the Dar Jamat Khana at the top of your post as I wish to write a blog on how I often passed this building while I lived in Dar. Do you know whom I can contact? Thanks
