KARACHI September 17, 2013: An MoU between Aga Khan University (AKU) and English Biscuit Manufacturers (EBM) for expansion of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was signed on Monday. The expansion will enable the hospital to treat premature, and seriously ill babies who need specialised care in a specifically equipped unit. The 200-million-rupee project will ncrease the number of beds from 12 to 24. Pakistan is one of the 10 countries with the highest number of preterm births in the world ( at least one in six babies are born prematurely. “We are proud to be associated with the AKU’s commitment in providing international standard healthcare. We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to support the university hospital’s dedicated and committed paediatric staff to offer unparalleled newborn intensive care,” said the EBM representative. Karachi’s 20-million strong population requires at least 600 NICU beds with ventilators for preterm babies to have a better chance of living. But, excluding the AKU Hospital’s current facility, just 18 working ventilated beds are available at 10 healthcare facilities across the city.
