Chinara Abdraimakumova, Deputy Governor of Naryn Oblast, emphasized the importance of Naryn’s partnership with UCA and AKDN: “The government is pleased to acknowledge the Aga Khan Development Network’s economic impact on the Naryn community. UCA has 180 young people working on its campus construction and we look forward to more economic opportunities. Additionally, there is an increase in intellectual stimulation in our area, due to the UCA School of Professional and Continuing Education.”
via http://www.timesca.com – On September 27, journalists from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan visited Naryn to attend a ceremony of the official start of Phase I construction of the University of Central Asia’s (UCA) campus in the mountainous Kyrgyz city.
Elimination of regional disparities is vitally important for Kyrgyzstan’s development as a modern, educated, and prosperous nation. According to the Kyrgyz Education Ministry, there are nearly 50 higher learning institutions and more than 130,000 students in the capital, Bishkek. Construction of Central Asia’s largest university in Naryn is a step toward developing education all over Kyrgyzstan, not in Bishkek alone.
Phase I includes preparation of the building site and construction of a 12,200 square meter facility comprised of a three storey academic building housing a library, classrooms, laboratories, and a dining hall, and two dormitory buildings. Phase I will benefit from previously constructed international standard sports facilities including two tennis courts and a football pitch. The campus master plan and concept design were conceived by the award-winning architecture firm Arata Isozaki & Associates.
The campus is being built on a 252-hectare site on the outskirts of Naryn which was presented to the University by the Government of Kyrgyzstan.
