Enlightened Encounters will reflect the diversity of the Museum’s programs. At its heart will be an exhibit featuring reproductions of a single work from the collection: an illustrated manuscript of Nasir’s Ethics. The manuscript, which was copied around 1590 in the court workshops of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, is based on a 13th-century Iranian text by the renowned Iranian writer Nasir al-Din Tusi (1201–74). Enlightened Encounters examines the “practical philosophy” of Nasir’s Ethics, which addresses a broad range of concepts from justice and love to ideas about educating children and good government.
Enlightened Encounters will also include education and performing arts events. A Museum education specialist will be present to lead programs for educators and young people. There will also be a community performance project led by Hussein Janmohamed, an internationally renowned composer, music educator and choral conductor. Finally, the Museum Director, Henry Kim, and other members of the curatorial staff will give lectures about the Museum and its collection.
Throughout this week you can learn more about Enlightened Encounters on the AKM’s official Facebook page … and you can also plan your visit to the event. Enlightened Encounters will be in the following cities: Chicago (October 4–20), Dallas (November 1–December 1) and Houston (December 6–29).
