via http://www.the-star.co.ke – The Aga Khan Trust for Culture has threatened to pull out of the Nairobi’s City Park rehabilitation project.
The developer wants illegal encroachment on the land addressed by the government.
It is feared that more than 63 hectares have been grabbed and sold to unsuspecting developers who have erected structures on it.
The structures range from residential houses, garages and petrol stations.
The Sh1.7 billion urban metropolitan recreational park deal signed between the government and the AKTC last year was to transform the park into a modern one.
The 25-year lease agreement was then to revert to the government.
AKTC’s deputy director of the Historic Cities Programme Jurjen van der Tas yesterday told the National Assembly Lands Committee that the encroachment has affected the first phase of the six-year project that is to start this month.
“The agreement with the government was about 63 hectares of the land and not the 19 hectares that are currently available for our rehabilitation,” Jurjen said.
“We are also waiting for the Kenya Urban Roads Authority to communicate the course of a proposed link road which initially was to pass through the park until the Trust protested and asked it to be re-directed.”
