Lessons in pluralism – An early learning childcare centre in Dubai

Lessons in pluralism - An early learning childcare centre in DubaiSarah Young / 29 July 2013, via http://www.khaleejtimes.com / An early learning childcare centre in Dubai is helping spread the ideals of pluralism and tolerance amongst the new generation, with a two-language focused approach.

A little girl is playing with her dolls, while her mother watches. She’s chattering away – to each doll in a different language.

Her mother, concerned, points this out to her, wondering if perhaps her child might be confused about which language to use when.

“No Mom,” the girl says, unconcerned. “That’s just my Dubai voice.”

For the children in the Aga Khan Early Learning Centre, a cacophony of voices is the norm.

This pluralism is one of the founding values of the secular, non-denominational centre located within the Ismaili Centre in Oud Metha — a value tangibly expressed in its bilingual English and Arabic immersion approach.
