Dr. Sadru Hemani treats tribe in Ecuador with Flying Doctors mission

NEWBURYPORT — Medicine in this country often involves miracle recoveries and high-tech solutions, but Dr. Sadru Hemani recently got back to the basics by going to a rain forest in Ecuador to provide rudimentary care to tribal members who have little access to clinics or hospitals.

Hemani provided care as part of a team during a medical mission last month with the Amazon Ecuador Flying Doctors. About 16 doctors, dentists and nurses traveled up the Amazon to treat a tribe that has no “modern” medical resources.

The team flew into Quito, Ecuador, and took a five-hour bus ride to a rural airstrip. Participants broke into groups and boarded a five-seater plane for an hour flight and then took a motorized canoe to reach a given community.

“We worked with the Achuar tribe, and it is a primitive way of life,” said Hemani, 73. “We brought along medications and antibiotics, and treated many families there.”
