Photo exhibit offers view of family's two years in AfricaPORTSMOUTH — Imagine packing up two young sons and heading off to spend two years in Kenya in East Africa, with just two weeks’ notice.

That’s what happened to David and Nike Speltz in 1982, when David was asked to become the chief operating officer for the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

The couple, who now live in Portsmouth, gave a slideshow presentation that detailed their adventures, titled “Two Kids and Two Years in Kenya,” Saturday afternoon at the Seacoast African American Cultural Center.

At the time of the call to Kenya, the Speltz family was living in Waterbury, Vt. David was the chief executive officer of Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Vt., and Nike worked for the Vermont Council on the Arts in Montpelier.

“I was accepted to the Kennedy School at Harvard University,” Nike said.

David tried to get a job in Boston. “But the only one I was offered was in Africa,” he said. He went on an interview with the Aga Khan Staff in Geneva, Switzerland.

“I brought home a cuckoo clock and some chocolates, but no job offer,” he said. But, a few days after returning to Vermont, he got the phone call — and could they be there in two weeks?
