Critical Conditions – New Hospital in Bamyan Represents Care for LifeIn the native language of the region, the name of Bamyan province roughly translates to “The Place of Shining Light.” But for many living in the harsh terrain of central Afghanistan, that shining light may sometimes feel dim.

“Bamyan is one of the poorest provinces in the country,” explains Tanya Salewski, Program Manager at Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC). “It has low agricultural productivity and very high infant and maternal mortality rates. It also has very limited access to health services.”
