Monica Zurowski/Calgary Herald – Day nine of our East African adventure starts in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. The name of this city (home to 4.3 million people) can be translated to mean “an abode or home of peace.” The city is also home to the professional development program for teachers that the Calgary-based Awali group helps support.

We arrive at the Aga Khan University’s Institute of Educational Development, East Africa, where a variety of faculty members meet visiting Awali founders to discuss the school’s success. As of last year, 158 teachers had graduated from the Masters program, while 1,620 had finished a certificate program. Those teachers have taught hundreds of thousands of students, explain institute director Pauline Rea-Dickins and Sameer Lakhani, who oversees marketing for the institute. However, the actual number of people those teachers has impacted is more than one million, when you add in the many family members of students and community members they also help.
