6 am came quickly, but not before a delightful hot shower, and we piled into the van to head to Mahinga National park. The drive was awful, the roads a concoction of dirt, potholes and rock. It took an hour (we were told 15 minutes) and finally arrived at the gorgeous lodge that marked the start of our trail. Our conquest of Mt. Sabyinyo, one of the three major volcanoes in the park, would take us on a 14km, 8 hour journey with an elevation gain of 1300 m to the final peak, which sat at 3669 m and rested comfortably in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
