In February 2010, Google announced its plan to ‘build and test ultra-high-speed broadband’ by launching an experimental fiber network. The networks would be similar to the WiFi network launched by Google in Mountain View in August 2006, which provides the community with free wireless internet access that could be accessed by anyone with a Google account.
Google Fiber, as it is referred, to would offer selected communities across America internet connections at 1-gigabyte per second, which according to the Google blog, is “100 times faster than what most Americans have today.” Communities selected would be able to offer residents internet at average speeds for no cost and access to the Gigabit internet for $70 a month with the option of adding television services for an additional $50 a month.
