The reason for poor school performance may be something as insignificant as a broken water pipeline where goats defecate.
This was the gist of a story told by Prof Andy Hargreaves, an educationist from Boston College in the United States, at the inauguration ceremony of an international education conference organised by the Aga Khan University-Institute of Education Development on Thursday.
Hargreaves shared a story of an elementary school which had a broken water pipeline where goats would defecate. As a result students who drank that water became sick, and absenteeism from school rose. The teachers began to think that parents no longer cared for education, and became de-motivated. Student dropout rate increased because no one taught properly at schools. Over the years, school performance deteriorated.
“When a team went to inquire, they realised that the problem lay with the broken water pipe. A fence was raised around it, and gradually students returned to school,” said Hargreaves.
