The long awaited $900 million plant was switched on amidst pomp and jubilation by hundreds of Ugandans and the business community.

The commissioning yesterday of the 250MW Bujagali power dam, Uganda’s largest hydropower plant, gave hope to industrialists, the business community and Ugandans who have suffered punishing power shortages over the last seven years.

President Museveni and His Highness the Aga Khan officially switched on the $900 million plant amidst pomp and jubilation by representatives of Ugandans and the business community. The ceremony was one of several celebrations organised to mark the country’s 50th independence anniversary.

The power plant was built through a public-private partnership between Uganda government, Sithe Global and Industrial Promotion Services, the infrastructure and industrial development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.
