Walkers from as far away as Hamilton and Niagara Falls will be coming to Uptown Waterloo June 10 in support of the 28th annual World Partnership Walk to End global poverty.
Participants will walk a 5-km loop, beginning at Waterloo Town Square and stretching into Waterloo Park, north on Albert Street, east on University Avenue and returning back to the square via King Street.
The World Partnership Walk is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada. They fund health care, microfinance, education and heritage preservation projects in more than a dozen countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Local walk spokesperson Basheer Habib said the event raised $6.7 million across Canada last year. This year, the fundraising goal is $7 million.
“We normally find that we go past our target anyway,” Habib said.
Supporters will walk simultaneously in Ottawa, Montreal and Waterloo.
