Family, Career & Community: Ayaz Gulamhussein delivers keynote address to the Alberta Student Energy Conference

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been a volunteer. When you grow up within the Ismaili Muslim community, volunteering is not an option – it’s an expectation.

Family, Career & Community – Delivered to the Alberta Student Energy Conference (BMO Centre), by Ayaz Gulamhussein Calgary, Alberta, March 23rd, 2012

Family, Career & Community: Ayaz Gulamhussein delivers keynote address to the Alberta Student Energy ConferenceFirstly, I would like to applaud all of the organizers of the Alberta Student Energy Conference for planning this outstanding event. Secondly, I’d like to recognize all of the sponsors for this event. Without the financial support of all of these key industry players, events such as this one would never happen.

When I was first asked by Ali to speak at today’s event, I was overcome by a multitude of emotions. I was both humbled and honored to have the opportunity to speak to so many talented and bright individuals, but I was also quite dismayed. Being on this side of the podium is a pretty stark reminder that I haven’t been a University student in 9 years!

Family, Career & Community: Ayaz Gulamhussein delivers keynote address to the Alberta Student Energy ConferenceWhen I asked Ali what he wanted me to speak about today, he gave me quite a broad sketch of what him and his team were looking for, so I hope that by the time the clock runs out on me – I’ll be able to cover off on all of those points.

A few years ago, I read a speech that was delivered by Jim Gray, at the Canada West Foundation Futures Gala. For those of you who don’t know who Jim Gray is, he was one of the founders of Canadian Hunter, which was later sold to Burlington, which in turn was amalgamated with ConocoPhillips. He was also made an officer of the Order of Canada in 1995, for his participation in a wide range of community activities and projects. I have always had a very deep admiration for Jim Gray, and his ability to balance his career with his community works. The text of Mr. Gray’s speech ‘The Triangles of my Life,’ is something I refer to regularly. The images I have up on the screen are figures I stole from Mr. Gray’s presentation, and essentially serve as the template for what I’d like to discuss today.
