Author(s): R. Armstrong; Aga Khan University East Africa, GPO 00100/KE
Abstract: Background: The Aga Khan University (AKU) is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a not-for-profit social development agency with focus on the countries of the Middle East, central and south Asia, and East Africa. AKU has now embarked on creating an international comprehensive university with an East Africa campus encompassing a new interdisciplinary Faculty of Health Sciences based in Nairobi and a Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Arusha along with a number of professional graduate programs. The AKU is committed to building a university that has an international standard of education and research quality and that is relevant to the context and priorities of the regions they serve. With extensive health assets in East Africa and strong linkages to the broader social development expertise of the AKDN, the university is in a unique position to play an important role in the academic development of the region. This presentation describes the model developed and the progress being made toward achieving this goal.
