A diverse group of recipients went home with shiny new belt buckles and a boost to their pride after being recognized at the 2011 Western Legacy Awards, handed out by the Calgary Stampede on Friday.
It was the biggest year yet for the awards program, with 60 individuals and organizations nominated in four categories.
“It feels amazing. I was not expecting it,” said Sheliza Kassam, 14, who won the youth award. “It shows that even at 14, you can actually make a difference. This will change my life.”
Sheliza is a member of the Mayor’s Youth Council and writes a blog on current city issues and events. She started volunteering at her mosque when she was just five.
Two years ago, Sheliza started collecting used eyeglasses to donate to people in Third World countries who can’t afford a pair.
