Rebounding after a troubled year, the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU) had made a noticeable effort to reinvent their image on campus over the past semester.
One portfolio that has seen tremendous growth in terms of visibility and capacity is that of Students and Equity, led by VP Zahra Murji. Armed with her slogan “equity served fresh,” Murji has helped to increase student involvement on campus by creating events that are based on important social issues like cultural diversity and domestic violence. Last semester, Murji piloted several events including Cultrunicity, Equity Cinema, Sit Down to Stand Up and re-introduced the Xpression Against Opression.
However, she admits that not all of her events ran without glitches.
“I do feel that there is a lot more that can be done…A lot of the events I threw this semester were brand new so there were a lot of bumps along the way and things we had to learn from,” she admitted. “It was a good semester but it could be better.”
Food Options
In terms of improving food options on campus, the SCSU has focused on re-vamping Rex’s Den to make it a viable food option for students. According to the union, the restaurant has performed better financially than in any year of its operation (including Bluff’s Restaurant). The union attributes much of the restaurant’s success to Inayat Samji, VP Operations, who has worked to improve the overall quality of the restaurant and maintain affordable prices.
