Ali to Karim: A Tribute to the Ismaili Imams
Presented by: Hafiz Karmali*** Self-Description: The Shia Ismaili Muslims are a community of ethnically and culturally diverse peoples living in over 25 countries around the world, united in their allegiance to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan (known to the Ismailis as Mawlana Hazar Imam) as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader), and direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). As an Ismaili Muslim theatre director (trained at the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard), I have dedicated much of my career to promoting a better understanding and appreciation for the performing arts in the Islamic world. The theatre production Ali to Karim – A Tribute to the Ismaili Imams toured 7 cities in the USA on the occasion of the Aga Khan’s Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary) as Spiritual Leader. ***Recipient: IFFF 2011CE “Theatre Production” Award

Production: Ali to Karim – a tribute to the Ismaili Imams
Company: A Golden Jubilee International Programme commemorating His Highness the Aga Khan’s 50th Anniversary as Imam to the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims
Venue: USA tour, Year: 2008, Author: Hafiz Karmali and Jon Stephen Fink, Directed by: Hafiz Karmali

Set in a library – Ali to Karim tells the story of 1400 years of Ismaili History. White being the colour of infinity the design was inspired by the White on White painting of Russian artist Kazimir Malevich. The white set formed a blank canvas onto which visual elements (such as geometric patterns and calligraphy) drawn from Islamic literary sources, manuscript paintings, art and architecture of the Arabic, Persian and Indic worlds interacted through the use of clever projections and lighting, vivid costumes, scenery and props.

  1. What a beautiful and visually striking set! Excellent video. It’s unfortunate that ‘Ali to Karim’ did not tour Canada.

  2. Hafeez,
Why don’t you write more or re-stage them for us to view trans-world? You did the conference of the birds in Boston years ago….. do more. Thank you!

  3. It was a wonderful experience for ALL who attended this theater presentation of Ali to Karim from its beginning in LA to its final cutain call in Houston. Everyone who saw this play was amazed, humbled and in awe by the wonderful and talented cast, the incredible visual effects and in hearing the the Ismaili people stories. For scores of people who attended both young and old came away from knowing more about their history, their Imam and proud of their hertiage. I watched as pride swelled and some cried when the Ismaili National Anthem was played, I know, I was there at every performace, I provided the quality technical support and all the audiovisual equipment necessary to make this a wonderful and successful experience.

I so enjoyed this event, I would love to be part of the next tour to Canada and the world for ALL to see!
